چکیده :
presence of crack in rotating machinery can have a detrimental effect on this expensive component and lower their reliability significantly. Despite the recent advances in forging techniques avoidance of flaws is still unreachable specifically for large components such as turbo-generator shafts. This paper presents a general approach with safety measurements for assessment of fatigue crack growth life time of a 370 MW generator shaft using finite element stress analysis and analytical linear fracture mechanic theories. Using this procedure one can calculate the maximum permissible initial flaw diameter observed in non-destructive ultrasonic examination and compute the fatigue life time of the component.
