چکیده :
This paper presents the design, analysis, and performance comparison of three high-speed permanent magnet (PM) motor topologies—surface-mounted PM (SPM), interior PM (IPM), and synchronous reluctance with auxiliary PM (SynRel-PM)—intended for flywheel energy storage system (FES) applications. A unified design formulation is developed considering rotor dynamics, stator/rotor core materials, slot selection, and electromagnetic loading. The candidate machines are designed with appropriate stator slots, dimensional parameters, and sleeve specifications to ensure both mechanical integrity and electromagnetic feasibility. Finite element method (FEM) analysis is employed to evaluate cogging torque, average torque, torque ripple, and efficiency at rated conditions. Comparative results highlight that the SPM machine provides the most favorable compromise in terms of torque density, efficiency, and cost-to-performance ratio, while the IPM and SynRel-PM machines demonstrate competitive characteristics under specific constraints. These insights provide a practical guideline for selecting and optimizing high-speed PM machines in energy storage systems.
